Did you ever run a 5K? When everyone starts off, novices tend to run faster than their normal pace and get tired out easily. The experienced runner with the steady pace from the start, will easily slide past most the beginners about 1/4 of the way and beat them. Now what has this analogy got to do with social media? Well, sometimes novices jump in and try and advance to be like others who have been in the game a long time, without the skills necessary to do so. Social media, though a fun, entertaining and useful time suck, should also have a purpose when it comes to business. When growing a brand or network, studying, learning and proceeding at a steady pace without looking to the sides or in front, would be my best advice.
Everyone is different, has different life situations (that often change) and often their social media patterns change accordingly. That guy or gal on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or whatever, may not be all that you think, just because they are “out there.” Some people schedule their social media around the clock, some have a team behind them, others may be filling a void in their life, while others are paid to be on there. I caution everyone to remember that social media should enhance your life or business, not take them over to the point where you lose sight of your goals. Do not be jealous of “that guy” or “that girl” on social media, but sit back and study them. If you have a business and put your time and energy into social media (which I truly believe is extremely important), please make sure you are getting measurable results and are meeting your goals.
