Breaking up or separating from a loved one, significant other, business or organization is hard enough to do. Compounding this matter with the complexity of a digital footprint and life has become truly complicated to really separate yourself from your past! We undoubtedly have all sadly witnessed many a Facebook friend change their relationship statuses and delete pictures of their former love interest. Sad, but that is part of life and cleansing ourselves to start fresh with a clean slate can be a very cathartic experience. Personal Facebook breakups can be painful and difficult enough, but what I want to discuss here is dealing with digital breakups regarding businesses and protecting your name or brand.
There are two matters that need to be addressed:
1. Erasing a past digital footprint.
2. Securing your digital future (realistically, not everything lasts forever).
Erasing: I had the pleasure of tackling one client’s difficult digital divorce, when they unloaded several franchises that were harming their brand. This involved lots of digging on various platforms throughout the web and a ton of emails on behalf of my client. Truly impossible to remove everything, but a huge dent was made and over time, their connection has been distanced so much it is almost impossible to detect. These digital divorces aren’t an immediate snap your fingers fix – impossible (pay a gazillion dollars to Google and maybe…LOL!). Also, on a personal note, I have had to erase some of my personal past business connections in order to launch forward with new endeavors. My digital past is so complex, it would be impossible for me to erase everything. However, I strive to pull my Google rankings up on my current business and over time increase distance from past relationships. And remember, I’m a social media person so my footprint is HUGE (even though I only wear a size 5.5).
Securing your future: One of my biggest Pet Peeves is digital ownership! I NEVER want to see a client not be able to manage or login to any of their online presence. I also want them to claim their mark on every digital platform that is important. Having proper access to many things can truly prevent future problems. It will not necessary eradicate all of them in the event of a digital breakup, but can make it easier. It is also important for everyone to keep track of their digital presence as much as possible and stay on top of things.
