We should all be so lucky to have the world know exactly who we are by a “checkmark” symbol or a first name such as “Madonna.” Nike sneakers and looks may change over the year, but the checkmark is a constant. As for Madonna the Material Girl, she has aged with many of us and been a marketing chameleon. But, at the end of the day, she is still Madonna! She has branded herself for life.
Many of my clients are entrepreneurs who own their own small business, own a franchise or are an independent representative for a larger company. Regardless of their job title, they are trying to go out there to market a “brand.” I like to think that we all have 2 brands with our “self” brand always being our constant.
Example #1: During one of my recent classes, I had an attendee who was working as an independent consultant for a major company. She only wants to and has time for her own Facebook page marketing and that is fine. I explained to her that no matter what company she is with or product she markets, her personal brand is always going to be there.
Example #2: Company owner whose company name had to change because she changed her name after a divorce. Now she has to re-brand her company all over again with a new name and of course, a new style and attitude to match. I told her she has grown as a person and is always going to be “her” but should have fun reinventing herself like Madonna.
Example #3: Me (Marsha Marsha Marsha I Know). I have been involved with other companies and organizations over the course of my life. I may be Hooah Wife, Kiss My Gumbo and the mature business woman behind the sexy red shoe of Kickify, but at the end of the day, I am and will always be “Greta.” My brand for life!
Embrace your “self brand” because you never know what type of journey and adventure life will take you on. Change is hard but can be a great thing too. You may grow as a person and have changed over time, but you are a brand, the most valuable asset to your future!
