Facebook Rules

Rules shmules….but do you want to be the one to break them? All that hard work you put into your Facebook Fan Page and to think…there is a remote possibility it could be gone when you wake up tomorrow. This could happen because you unintentionally broke FB’s Terms of Service (TOS). And yes, we are aware of a couple of FB Fan Pages who were removed because of this, that or the other and had to lawyer up to get back in the game. This is not something totally hypothetical. And who knows when they will start cracking the whip even more? We are not lawyers here, but understanding and following the constantly changing FB TOS, is something we are vigilant about doing. Chances are, mom and pop company’s FB page is not going to get on FB’s bad side like one of the “big boys.” But what if you have a disgruntled employee or angry customer who wants to make your life miserable? They could certainly attack your Facebook page and report it to get you of FB’s radar.

Pathetically, one of my hobbies is seeing what the “big boys” are doing on their FB pages for promotion and contests. I’ll let you in on a little secret…many of them have hired big companies to run their social media and are still breaking the TOS!!! Just saw one the other day who was getting major kudos from some tech sites for their big contest and yep – rule breakers…oh the shame!

    Hey Greta,

I think Facebook is great marketing tool. The problem is FB does change rules and we don’t own it. That is why businesses should definitely engage on Facebook but drive people to their own website that they own and that they control.

I, too have seen pages taken down, but I cringe when I see people setting up a profile for their business. Since FB has given them a way to convert that to a page, I think they will be really cracking down on this TOS violation soon. 🙁
